Equipment to help me stay independent at home

Many people can continue to live safely at home with the use of specialised equipment. This can maintain your independence and delay or prevent the need for social care.

Here are some examples:

  • bath board or bath lift: makes it easier to get in and out of the bath.
  • raised toilet seat or rails: helps with getting on and off the toilet.

The NRS safe and well Buckinghamshire website can suggest suitable equipment and where to buy it after you answer a few questions.

Many everyday items, like electric can openers and large-handled cutlery, are available from retailers at a low cost. High street shops, online retailers, and pharmacies stock simple equipment. Charities and organisations for specific conditions can also provide advice.

The Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) offers factsheets on daily living equipment.

You can get recommended equipment for free, on loan, from NRS Healthcare, our local community equipment service.
