Contingency plans if you care for someone

Contingency plans, also known as emergency plans, show what support is needed if you are unable to look after the person that you care for. They are for anybody who looks after someone as an unpaid carer.

How to request a contingency plan

We will create a contingency plan as part of your carer's assessment.

If you have had an assessment but do not have a plan, contact us to ask for a review.

What your plan will show

During your assessment, we will ask you about yourself and the person that you care for.

We will consider any needs that person may have to ensure that the plan we create will support them if needed.

This could be things like:

  • emergency contacts
  • details of medication
  • specific needs that the person that you care for has

How it's used in an emergency

Your contingency plan is saved to your record on our social care recording system.

We recommend that you share a copy of your contingency plan with friends or relatives who may be included.

If you have not had a carer's assessment

If you have not had one already, you should request a carer's assessment.

We commission Carers Bucks to provide a range of support services to residents across Buckinghamshire. You can also get a contingency plan by speaking to them, and they will also give you a carers emergency card to keep in your wallet.
