Get urgent help for an adult with care needs
Find out what to do if a friend or relative, who is supported by a carer, needs help in an emergency.
Knowing who to speak to or what to do can make all the difference.
What to do in an emergency
If someone has lost consciousness or is unable to communicate, you should call 999.
If you do not think it’s an emergency but are unsure what to do, you should speak to NHS 111:
- by using 111 online
- in the NHS App
- by calling 111
If there’s been an accident
If someone has had an accident or suddenly become immobile, we recommend that you do not move them as you could injury yourself or the person who needs help. You should request medical help by calling 999 for an ambulance.
If the situation is not urgent, however, you need help with moving and handling, contact our occupation therapy team on 01296 387 024.
If their carer is not available or in hospital
If someone receives paid-for care and they have not turned up, contact the care agency.
If an unpaid carer has not turned up when expected, you should either:
- activate any contingency or emergency plan that’s been put in place
- contact their social worker (if one is assigned)
- contact our social work team on 0800 999 7677
