Paying for care at home
Buckinghamshire Council will support you to remain in your own home. Sometimes, there may be a need for you to pay towards this care.
Homecare, also known as ‘Domiciliary Care’, provides support to individuals in their own homes. Services can include:
- help with personal care
- medication management
- meal preparation
- help with household tasks
Your financial eligibility will be assessed, as some services will have a cost.
The amount of money you may have to pay for these are based on how much you have in savings.

Options for care at home
If you are eligible for homecare services, you could get:
- Personal care services: help with activities like washing, dressing, and toileting.
- Domestic help: support with household tasks such as cleaning, washing your clothes, and meal preparation.
- Reablement services: short-term support aimed at helping you regain independence following a hospital stay or an illness.
- Respite care: temporary care services to provide relief for primary caregivers.
- Live-in care: around-the-clock care provided by a live-in carer who assists with daily needs.
What will I need to tell you?
We want to help you find out if you have to pay anything for the care you get. For this, we need to know about your money situation.
We will ask you some questions about any money or benefits you get, if you have a pension and if you own your home.
Your social care worker will tell you if do not have to pay for your care. You may not have to pay if you are:
- eligible for Continuing Healthcare
- receiving reablement support
The money you pay towards your care will not prevent you from meeting your household costs. We will make sure you have enough to cover extra expenses relating to a disability.

When charging does not apply
In line with section 14 of the Care Act, you may not have to pay for care and support if:
- you are getting help under section 117 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
- you are receiving intermediate care or home independence care following a hospital stay.
- you have Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
- you are eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare or Funded Nursing Care
What if I do not want to tell you about my finances?
You do not have to tell us about your finances if you do not wish to. This is called "non-disclosure". You would still be entitled to the same care. But you will not be eligible for help with the costs, and you will have to pay the full cost of your care.
