Support if you care for family or friends
If you help an adult friend or family member who could not manage without your support, you are a carer - even if you are not paid. There is support available for you too.
Suddenly finding yourself in the situation of caring for a loved one can be difficult.
We can help you by providing:
- an assessment to identify your needs
- support if you need a break from your caring role
- signposting to community resources, information, guidance and advice
- services to support your needs
Carer’s assessment
If you care for someone, we can carry out an assessment to see what might help make your life easier.
Caring for someone can include things like:
- washing, dressing or giving medicines to someone
- getting out and about and taking someone to a doctors' appointment
- shopping or cleaning for someone
- paying someone’s bills and organising their finances

Financial support
If you qualify for support following a carer’s assessment, we may provide you with money towards your care costs. This is known as a personal budget.
There are also other benefits you may be entitled to, including government schemes and a reduction on your Council Tax.

Taking a break from your caring responsibilities
Caring for someone can be tough, especially when you are doing it alongside your family commitments and your work.
When you have an assessment, we will discuss your situation and may be able help the person that you care for with:
- short-term respite care
- paid-for care
